Her Panel Selection—Inconceivable’
BY ROBERT KISTLER
Times Staff Writer
The trial of Charles Manson lasted
288 days.
A long time.
it was roughly from the Fourth of
July to Easter, with Thanksgiving, |
Christmas, the World Series, foot- |
ball, and a trip to the moon in be-|
tween.
The jurofs in the Manson case
were sequestered 225 days (for alter-
nates, the time was slightly less)——
the longest known jury lockup in
the history of the United States. |
"Some of them,” a veteran bailiff:
reflected after it was over, "really |
tried and tried to make the best of it. |
‘Others bitched all the time." '
For Jean Roseland, a 41-year-old |
secretary and mother of three teen-
agers, the ordeal was "an education, '
in the literal meaning of that word.
"All in all, I guess I really enjoyed
it. But, I know now that I'd never|
want to do it again.” i
Mr3. Roseland consented to hours,
of interviews with The Times in an
attempt to re-create what being a
Manson juror was really like.

with heavy smog.
