Speaking’ was Marie’ Mesmer, one
of 12 jurors whiose: lives for ihe last
nine and one-half mouths have been
spent trying to determirie the fate of
Charles. Manson and his three girl
followers.
The former drama critic was one
of four jurors who granted inter-
views arter the trial's end. Her
‘words seemed to reflect. a general
feeling. by those who spoke--that~
the verdict was. a meaningful ex-
ample, eapectally aimed at the
young.
"Now. I can go home with peace of
mind," Miss‘ Mesmer:said, "I think I
have served my purpose as a juror
and.I think that I have protected so-
ciety in having the poise or gump-
tion or guts.or whatever you want to:
call it to.do-what I. did."

spoke longer and more
thoughtfully. She said she
actually felt sorry for two

they had come from good
backgrounds."
But. the Sorrow was not
-enough to stay her vote of
\ death.
"J listened very careful-
ly, all the time during this
trial. And I didn't see any
inkling at. any time that
they (the girls) were re-
morseful.
"All they said was 'I did
it because ‘did it.’ And
that's a hell of a reagon ‘for
going out. and bi
"We already had made.our deci-
sion. quite early," she said, "but we
had to argue the various, points of
life over the death penalty, .
"But there. were. hardly any disa-
greements in. the end. We’ all felt
Charles Manson is a dangerous in-
fluence on. society.
“Tn my verdict I wanted to. protect
the society." .
Miss Mesmer agreed that. the time
spént-on. the trial Had been. "wear-
ing, ‘difficult . ...a great emotional
experience." "But, she added, "it was
just a job, And I applied: mysel And

way:"
She spoke little of Manson, except
to say, "I remember Charlie said, I
pelieve he said, that there was no
one in the court half as good as he
was. I. don't know how he figured
