. FD-350 (Rev. 7-16-63)
mémiter of the Charles Manson
hippie family, today was a free
woman after a Superior Court
judge ruled she did not violate
conditions of her immunity from
prosecution during the murder
trial of Robert Beausoleil.
Superior Court Judge Kath-
leen Parker issued a writ of ha-
beas corpus yesterday, releas-
ing Miss Brunner from
Gary Hinman, 34,
“Relieved, happy, excited!’
the 26-year-old blonde responded
when newsmen asked how she
felt. “I am going home to see
my baby.”
She described her attorneys,
James Patterson and Howard
Weitzman, as “fantastic.”
Miss Brunner was indicted for
the July, 1869, torture-murder of
the Malibu musician after
times during the Beausoleil
trial.
Beausoleil was convicted and
is awaiting death at San Quen-
tin.
Upon her release later from
Sybil. Brand Institute for wom-
en, she was given a tearful,
emotional reception at the gate
by four members of Manson’s
so-called “family.”
The tears soon turned into
Mf laughter as she re-
indifferently to news- |
murder charges in the death of

Filming her release from cus-
tody yesterday was Laurence
Merrick, president of Merrick
Film Productions of Hollywood.
He said she would be part of his .
full-length motion picture, due
for release in October, on the
“Manson family.”
Merrick said no definite title
has been chosen for the picture.
He drove the car which took
Miss Brunner, her four ‘“‘fami-
ly” friends and the film crew
away from the jail. Asked
where they were going, Merrick
said, ‘‘to the Spahn Ranch.”
It was Miss Brunner’s eye-
‘witness testimony that helped
‘convict Beausoleil, known as
“Cupid” to the Manson group. ,
But then she signed an affida
vit that she had lied to the
grand jury which indicted Beau-:
| soleil. And during the trial she:
again changed her story, stating
her original testimony implicat-
ing the defendant was true.
“I believe it is far better that
this woman go unpunished than
the district attorney’s office
show it can’t keep its word
(promising immunity),” Patter~
son argued. “In the long run,

Judge Parker said she felt
three-pronged conditions of the
immunity promised to her by
authorities.
“The people’s action in filing
ihe murder charge was prema-
ture,” Judge Parker ruled.
“The people are disenchanted
with their witness, and I must
say with considerable reason
. there’s no question that she
changes her mind with frequen-
cy.
“But up to this point at least,
the defendant has—although
with some _ reluctance—con-
formed to the conditions of im-
munity.”
Judge Parker approved a re-
quest by Deputy Dist. Atty. Bur-
ton Katz that Miss Brunner be
ordered to appear in court on
Oct. 13 to testify in the trial of:
Charles Manson, Susan Atkins
