re, + i 1ZA3-Al | _ ee GERMAN AMERICAN BUND activities (ag 278 HHH ERR EERE EES RR KE RRR EERE I THE FREE AMERICAN AND DEUTSCHER WECKRUF & BEOBACHTER, Volume @.- Number 25, New York December 11, 1941. This issues which is dated Thursday December ll, 1941 apparently was printed according to the customary sche- dule which would mean Tuesday afternoon December 9th in Philadelphia which would mean a deadline for editorial matter for Monday December &th. This is mentioned because the physical appearance of the paper indicates that the entite contents were made up prior to the outbreak of war on Sunday December 7th. There is a big article in English on the front page and @ special box which must have been put in at the last minute and a small editorial in German on page 4 which Similarly must have been a last-minute affair. Detailed references to these articies will be found below. Aside from these three articles the rest of the peper is ® stale® stuff,--material which obviously was written prior to December 7th. T Bs holesleag CHF S62. BAT HERE The first article referreg to above is in heavy type across the front page TOUR COUNTRY, RIGHT OR WRONG, WHEN INVADED" It is a hypocritical appeal to German Americans " to conform loyally and unreservedly with the duties of their citizenship." It suddenly ends with the admonition: " We counsel our readers to abstain from word and action that may afford cause to excited minds for unjust attacks." "ALE WEFORMALION CONTAI In contras& to thie " appeal for loyalty " is a German editorial on page 4, last column, bottom, which is entitled " War with Japan" and is unsigned. A complete translation of this editorial follows because it indicates that there m6 is a decided catch to the " unreserved loyalty® proclaimed wa in the Imglish section of the paner- ———_—_—— USWAR WITH JAPAN" ae CL-I5¢ 6-3/5) " Japan has hit hard and has eet with uch venemence jy « and with such suddeness that those politicidns CI Washington were more surprised than anyone else. We do not know how many young lives of Americans standing guard have already been lost by this under » handed attack before they ever had a:chance to be ” armed for a counter-attack. é
