Dan Vexttn Ine, of Mission (Texas), and ArcHBisho poncpaxtticty of the San Antonio Archdiocese were “at-Odde on 6 66, over the Catholic Chufch™s position in the Starr County strike for higher wages for farm hands. Msgr. LANNINS , in a sermon at St. aaltd cathoiic Church in Mission, Sunday morning, chargej clergymen from San Antonio who have taken part in the strike are "imposters and intruders" and that they "do not speak for the church." The article also stated that Father CHARLES GRAHMANN, Secretary to Archbishop LUCEY, said on behalf of the Bishop on 6/20/66, that “Monsignor LANNING is of the old school that believes priests should sit in their rectory and watch the world go by and not get involved in the social evils of the world. . Father GRAHMANN agreed that the two priests who participated in a so-calied “civil rights" march in Rio Grande . City do not officially represent the Church, although he said they went to Rio Grande City with the "permission" of Archbishop LUCEY. Both the Political Association of Spanish-Speaking Organizations (PASO) and the Teamsters Union have expressed interest in helping the strikers. It should be noted that PASO is an organization formed in about 1960 which has chapters throughout the State of Texas.
