J. Stanley Pottinger, Assistant Attorney General
(AAG) of the Civil Rights Division (CRD) of the Department
met with the Director in the Director's Office late on the
afternoon of 11/14/73. In attendance were Assistant Director
: Robert E. Gebhardt of the General Investigative Division and .
Y” . Acting Section Chief Joseph G. Kelly of the General Investigative
Division's Civil Rights Section.

Pottinger stated he had primarily requested to
_ gee the Director as a matter of courtesy but in addition
- desired to furnish the Director with pertinent background
° information relating to certain requests he hac made for
investigation since he anticipated the Director might well
receive inguiries from the White House and other sources
a concerning them.
—He added that he had recently found it necessary
to request Bureau investigations into a number of highly
sensitive and delicate matters and he personally wanted to
thank-the Director for the outstanding cooperation which the
FBI had extended to him and for the exceptional manner in
which ‘the Bureau had handled the investigations involved. *
