Over mountains sod through valleys I watched streaming, steggering lines
of starving aged men, agonizing women, frightened childrea, tiny, shruoken
bebies, the spawn and the spoils of Nazi-Fascist-Communistic totalitarianians.
I saw them in the refugee comps and in the roadside gutters of this war-cuined
world, ond from their livid hips I leamed terrible testimony to the mockery of
the totalitarianism “perndiea” fram which they had been liberated! They told
no tales of Communism plenty, equality, and justiot. Theirs were stories of
hunger, oppression, and desth, Deprived of all but life iterlf, deluded sod
debaped, they bad been driven fsom their plagued aod plundered homeland.
I have also even the terror mirrored in the tear-emnptied eyes of men,
women, sod children who, when told they were going to be repstriaied, pee
fected suicide in exile to enslavement, cruelty, and death st bore!
If these memocies were yours, ss they are mine, if you believe with me thet
freedom is the birthright of the grest and the small, the strong and the weak,
the poor and the afflicted, then you would be convinced o¢ I thet Communiam

confusion snd dimojos ape spawning sod spreading, and Commanism ie grow-
ing. In their efforts to wean Ameckens from Americoniess, Communists
politically, socially, or morally from their own, Their subtle, sinister echemw-
ings sway and mislead Americans who, in ignorance or weakoew, yield to Com
sunism thelr loyalty to God, to country, and to their fellow maa. .
FTEN we fail to put upon the precious things of life theis proper peice.
Freedom is one of these, But freedom is not « (reasute which, once
possemed, cannot bo lost; snd i will be lost for us end for our children unless
it ls cherished, defended, sod pecserved an it wae fought for and won. The
bistory of our United States is the story of the ceaseless etruggie to keep alive
this freedom end our ideas and ideals of liberty and democracy, and to defend
them fro enemics within and without ber borders.
1, myself, saw the costly writing of this story during 140,000 miles of
warcyears’ travel over the land, on the ecea, and in the skies, living, tulking,
praying with thousands of our men of the atmed forces, On ocarly evexy
foreign field af battle our men fought, auiered, and died to seve America from
foes outside ber frontiers, and we, who through our soldiers’ sacrifices were
spared from the enslavement of totalitarienisen, must now defend her froc this
sexoe peril threstening us from withia our boundaries, Our eoartyrs, living and
