There were indications that
Philby, a dark-haired, dashing-
ly handsome man who once
served as first secretary at
the British Embassy in Wash-
ington, was apparently a dou-

Soviet Union were allies in
World War II.
Philby was first secretary
of the British Embassy in
Washington from October 1949
until June 1951, returning to
Britain.a month after Burgess
and Maclean fied to Russia.
