Setting Commons records straight BY OUR POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT MPHERE are to be consulta- tions between Government and Opposition in the hope of agreeing on some means of setting House of Commons records straight about the Philby affair. __ But Mr. Macleod, Leader of the House, made clear yesterday ireport—P30] that the Govérnment has no intention of finding time for a motion which could be construed as tensuring the Prime Minister. The motion, sponsored jointly by Mr. Lipton (Lab.. Brixton) and Mr. Wigg {Lab. Dudley), arises from Mr, Lipton’s personal statement ia November, 1955. In this he with- drew an allegation that Mr. Harold Philby was the “Third Man” in the Burgess-Maclean episode. it invites the House to “ deplore the fact that Mr. Lipton was pre- vailed on by the formal assurances of Mr. Macmillan,” then Foreign Secretary, to make his statement, “SLUR” UNJUSTIFIED In the Government's view. this amounts to an unjustified slur on Mr. Macmillan. Ministers have to speak on the information avail- able to them at the time, When Mr. Macmillan reported that there was no evidence identi- fying Philby as the “third man™ he did so in good faith.
