He stated that every meeting with BURGESS was practically a repetition of tbe previous meeting. said that the Past time he say BURGESS was when the latter came to his office in early March of 1951, at which time BURGESS took him te Junch at Bonat's Restaurant, 202? Vermont Avenues, 8. W., in order te reciprocate for all of the drinks that he had been furnished at the Frese Club. said that et that time BURGESS was 711, bul that he was not aware of the mature of this iliness, Im connection with this limcheon meeting, mentioned that BURGESS had driwen to Bonat's with him in the former's Lineoln Continental and he had parked between two signs designating a no parking loading zone, telling MMW that he didn't have to worry’ about being illegally parked since he was a diplomat. said that during the time that he had some association | -with BURSESS, the latter talked about joining the Metropolitan Club in Washington, D. O., but he had decided against doing that because of the six months waiting period required after the Tiling of an application. BURGESS then talked about joining the Press Club anc agg told hin that he would make Bore inquiry to determine if he were eligible for membership because of hig position with the British Embassy. aM stated that in March, 1951, he wrote BURGESS a letter, enclosed a Press Club application lank, end promised to sponsor his membership end to introduce him to. two other potential sponsors. BMP stated that he hac never heard from BURGESS on this matter. Cd Web advieed that when he had first learned from the prese and radio that two British Mplomate were missing, even before their names were published, he was sure that BURGESS was one of them, not because he was & Communist, but because he was a restlese type of person and seemed so de- pressed by his feeling that the United States was going to get the rest of the world in a lot of trouble by pushing further in China than it should. i said that BURGKSS was excited and disturbed by attitodes in this country, and that be AgMMRMMM could well imagine BURGESS lookigg for a refuge in the Soviet Union or anywhere else for that matter. SP sais that he had also considered the possibility of BURGESS! losing his mind. f reiterated that the reason be believed that BURGESS might go to Russia was because BURGESS took politics sc seriously and thought the United States was creating difficulties in the world which need not exist, . ae
