American Embassies, but that shortly after this incident MACLEAN left Cairo.
She stated that she had no reason to believe that MACLEAN's departure fron
Caire was caused by this incident, but was rather of the opinion that he left
of his own volition to seek medical aid. umMMRBMp advised that she had
considered MACLEAN and his wife to have a well adiusted home life, adding that
he appeared to be very fond of his wife and children. She stated that while
in Cairo she had never heard any reports that MACLEAN possessed homosexual J

had net MACLEAN at a ball held at the British Enbassy in Cairo, probably durirg
the Winter of 1948 ~ 1949. He stated that he subsequently saw MACLEAN at one
or two parties, but to the best of his recollection, he had never engaged in
conversation with him. He said that he could furnish no information concerning
MACLEAN'ts political views and that nothing had ever come to his attention which
would indicate any pro-Soviet or pro-—Communist sympathies on the part of MACLEAN.
