tt has been reported that from about January, 1950, until May,
1950, MacLean was crinking bn company with a journalist,

Guy Francis de Moncey Burgess was born April 16, 1911,
in England, fe attended Canbridge University, reportedly heing
a Communist while there, Fron 1934 to 1935 he lectured in
history at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, Frem 1935 to
1929 he was with the British Broadcasting Company engaged in
anti-Vazgt propaganda work, From 1939 to e was employed
by the oritish Intelligence organization from 1941 to
1944 he was again with the Pritish Broadcasting Company. From
i944 to 1946 he had a temporary appotntment tn the News
Depart ent of the Foreign Office in London and was thereafter
enploved tn the private office of the Minister of State, Hector
MacNeil, until 1948. He then worked from 1948 to 1950 fa the
Far Eastern Department of the Foreign Office, and in August,
1950, was transferred to the British Embassy in hashington, D. C.
in the Far Eastern Affairs Depa-tment,. He left the United States
on transfer back to England on }ay i, 1951, After his return he
was called before a board and ..formed that all chances for
further promotion in the British Foretgn Service were over, Tris
ts reportedly tantamount to dismissal procedure, Burgess! recall
from the United States grew out of a letter dated March 14, 1251,
from Governor Rattle of Virginia to a the
Chief of Protocol of the State Department, In this letter
Gavernor 3attle called attention to the facet that during March
1951, Tuy Burgess and an individual by the name of meetumasmerton:
had been arrested and brought before Judge Binford on a charge
of rechiess driving. Burgess ¢ilaimed diplomatic innunity for
himself and the driver, reportedly even going so far as to
threaten the arresting officer in the event tre case was prosecuted.
