‘the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I make this statement freely and I
have received no threats or promises. I have been advised that this state-
ment may be used in a court of law.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. during the first or second week in April of
1951, I was thumbing a ride at Fredericksburg, Virginia en route to
dacksonville, Florida where I anticipated attending an i

At this time I was picked up by an unknown individual driving a 1941 Lincoln
Continental convertible. The driver after asking me how far I waz going,
told me he wae en route to Charleston, South Carolina and would be glad
to give me a lift as far as Charleston.
After we were under way, the driver of the car identified himself ae UY
BURGESS, a British-diplomat stationed in the United States. Burgess per-
sonally drove his car as far as Richmond, Virginia and in as auch as brake
trouble developed, Burgess stopped at the Ford garage or Broad Street near
the Railroad Station in Richmond tor approximately 2 hour for repairs.
