During the encaspuent of the B.E.F. in Washington an Act
ef Congress was approved by the President authorising leans to
veterans fer the purpose of returning to their homes, 5091 ef the
Yomus marchers made application for leans under this Act of
Congress. The Veterans Administration furnished each applicant
with a card which was to contain the name of the applicant, his
avwy serial nomber, service resord, organisations, date of
service, clain number, if any, and application mumber for adjusted
service certificate. It has been noted that in a great many
cases the cards were not conpletely executed. Nevertheless,
all $091 cards were submitted to the different service branches
of the armed forces for the purpose ef identifying the appli-
eants and withdrawing fingerprint records to sompare the same
with the eriminal records of the United States Bureau of Investi-
gation. 4506 of these cards were submitted to the Identity
Section of the Warld War Division of the War Departaent. The
nN War Department was uable to identify the fingerprint records
Oy of 696 of these individuels. 3810 were identified end finger-
Se prints compared with the criminal records of the United States
Bureau of Investigation. 473 cards were submitted to the Navy
Department, of which 445 were identified and 24 were not. The
445 cards were compared with the criminal records in the United
States Bureau of Investigation. 108 cards were submitted to the
United States Marine Corps, All were identified and fingerprint
ae comparisons made. 4 cards were mibmitted to the Bnited States
= Coast Guard, only one being identified, and compared with
. criminal regords,
The dumearisation of the 5091 cards submitted to the
Ne: service branches indicated that 4344 fingerprints were obtained
and compared with the fingerprints on file in the United States
Bureau of Investigation. 727 cards were not identified,

identification divisions of the services indicated, using such
data as was indicated on the eard with reference to organization,
ee i service, dates thereof, et cetera, as a further check to support
es the identifleation,
