(SCEF); “THE SOUTHERN PATRIOT" (SP) An article in the December, 1967. issue of “The re Southern Patriot" (SP) commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the pt blication with that issue recites the following: The Southern Conference for Human Welfare (SCHW) was organized in 1938: SP, started in 1942 as the publication of SCHW, was taken over by the Southern Conference Educational Fund, Inc. (SCEF), in the late 1940's when SCHW went out of existence. SCEF, originally the “educational wing" of SCHW, continucd as an independent organization. For almost two decades, concern of SCHW and SCEF was with racial segregation and oppression of black people. In 1964, SCEF recognized that the legal back of segregation had been: broken and economic and political gains were necessary if Southern life was te change. In the past few years, SCEF has also supported battles for academic freedom and the Southern movement for world peace. The Southern Conference for Human Welfare (SCHW) was cited as a Communist front by the House Committe on Un-American Activities, House Repert 592, June 12, 1947. “In the same house revort. "The Southern Patriot” was cited as an “organ" of the SCHW, The September. 1967, issue of SP refers to SCEF as a 2 community of organizers and sriters" stating its work 4s - centered in organizing the poor in Appalachia for political and economic poxer. helping white people in the Deep South find a common cause vith black people, helping local groups organize action for peace and working for abolition of the “House Un-American Activities Comumittee." The Masthead of SP in its April. 1968, issue states “The Southern Con‘erence is dedicated to ending racism. poverty, and other injustices in the South; it epposes war as an instrument of national policy."
