4 SALE Spee O : O- - APPENDIX STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE Sho ° The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC),- headquartered at 360-362 Nelson Street, S. W., Atlanta, Georgia, is a nonmenbership organization, which vas born out of the sit-in movement that erupted acrcses the Sonth beginning in 1950. Today SKCC identifies itself as an orgenization in the revolutionary vanguard. [t advocates that to be successful it is necessary to develop a revolutionary ideology and revolutionary pregram. According to SNCC, the year 1967 warked a historic milestone in the struggle fer the liberstion of black people in the United States and the yeor that revolutionaries throughout the world began to understand more fully the impect of -the black movement. SNCC declared that “liberation will come only when there is final destruction of this mad octopus - the capitalistic system of the United States with 211 its life-sucking tentacles ‘ of exploitation and racism that choke the people of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The realities of black life, together with the recognition instilled in SNCC workers forced its menbers — to further popularize the legitimacy of self-defense and rebellions when oppression becene too great." ‘ * , From May, 1966, until May, 1987, Stokely Carmichael was National Chairman of SHCC. As of July, 1958, Carmichael resided in Washirgton. D. C., where he was aifiliated with SNCC aud 2ctive as temporary chairman of a black coalition group. In Hay, 1867, Carmichsel was replaced by dubert Geroid Brewn, comsonly known as H. Rap Brown, who served until June, 1968. In Juve, 1968, at the Staff and Central) Cormittce meeting of SHCC held in Atlanta, Georgia, it was decided ts restructure the crganizztion by equalization of responsibility by creating ten deputy or vice chairmanships. The primary purpose for this change is to take law enforcement pressure off any Bingle individual. ~36- ae
