Tne article went on to state that ZOLLICOFFER defined
the purpose of the conference as an opportunity to discuss
community problems, develop common goals, and stimulate Winston
Salem State University students to Fecome more involved in
local issues. ZOLLICOFFFER estimated that between 75 and 100
persons participated in the day-long conference. The
articie noted several individuals who have received notoriety
in the Winston Salem area among the black citizenry resulting
from previous campaigns for public office and among them was
speaker at the conference, Mrs, LEE FAYE MACK. The article also
noted that BUFORD 0. BAILEY and RODNEY SUMLER and VIRGINIA
NEWELL were recognized as notential candidates for Alderman
seats in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and were favorably ,°’
preeted by ZOLLICOFFFR.

17 year old Winston Salem youth had been sentenced to death
for his conviction on a rape charge on March 20, 1974, TARRY

Commission for Racial Justice, headauartered in Raleigh, North
Carolina, would be in contact "with the condemned's mother and
that the BPP had received several calls about the conviction
and that LITTLE anticipated the BPP organizing a lobbying \)
campaipn against the deeth penalty.
The North Carolina - Virginis Commission for
Recial Justice, with headquarters in Raleigh,
North Carolina, is funded by the United Church
of Christ, New York, New York. The Commission has
promoted moarches, demonstretions and public
meetings for black causes. Emphesis as of May,
1973, is on the theme “freedom for all political
prisoners,"
