It was learned from informants of thia fice that BRECET had not been observed at the apartment of RUTHYSERLAU, 12h, East 57th St., NYC, since about the time he testified before the House . Committees on Un-American Activities on 10/30/47. On 11/19/47, representatives of the Experimental Theater, ‘ unit of the American Theater & academy, 139 ‘est ‘th Street, ad- vised Celebrity Service, Ince, NYC, that BRECHT was in Switzerland and would not be in NYC for the opening of "Galileo” 12/7/47 which was sponsored by that organization. > Records of Immigration & . Naturalization Service, NYC, reflect that EUGEN RECHT, undoubtedly identical with the subject, left NYC on 10/31/47\for Paris, France, via Air France Airlines, plane #P-BAZL. His age 3s indicated to be 49 years old and had re-entry permit 1437991<%'A stop has been Placed with Customs at NYC to notify this office on subject's return to the US and it is suggested Los Anzeles place a national customs stop if deomed advisable. Conficential Informant advised that on 11/3/47 subject 6f another investigation, conferred with . concerning BRECHT'S play Galileo” and the latter would like to present it in his theater in Rome. They made arranzenents for RUTH BERLAU to meet CRANE at his office, 522 Pifth Avenue, NYC, on 11/13 to ciscuss the play, and STERN remarked BERLAU had BRECHT'S power of attorney. BERLAU was at STERN'S home at the time. The same informant advised that on 11/7/47 JOHN 0. CRANZ told MARTHA DODD STERN that BERLAU had brought him the manuscript of “Galileo” which he was interested in and he was sending it to _ Itelye CRANE indicated he would write "him" (BRECHT) and arrange the contact in Italy for him apparently concerning presentation of the play. CRANE stated STERMW had done a good job with HENNEY? es the latter was very cooperative, and added he had told BERLAY td write to his friend in Europe as soon as she gete over there.
