While I assume the Bureau or the Atlanta police have already considered this possibility, I wanted to bring it to your attention. Such techniques, which popular reports suggest were used by Scotland Yard in the Yorkshire Ripper case, involve computer-assisted analysis of case descriptions to identify significant communali- ties in cases. ; The analysis could aid in identifying patterns in the events that are not easily understood through non-computer- -assisted processes; provide probability statements concerning questions investigators might ask (e.g., likelihood of one or more perpetrators); and suggest strategies for effective deployment of patrol and investi- gative resources. Depending on the status of the records (i.e., if they have already been exhaustively coded and loaded into computers}, such an analysis could be done within a 7-14 day period.
