The reason for keeping the stock in this way was to identify the possible differences in the spores between the two methods of storage. The 1% phenol solution kept the live spores from growing and maintained the live spores. Live spores can be stored in this manner for up to five years without much maintenance. Spores maintained in water needed to be re-washed and re-enumerated every two weeks as spores tend to grow when kept in water.
