It is possible that the 5-Liter fermentor mentioned above used for pilot fermentation runs and this CT are one and the same. This fermentor was relocated to FBI agent |__| was contacted about the theory of a feasible working volume for a fermentation run. He stated the minimum volume would have to come from the manual of operations for a particular fermentor but theorized that’a fermentor would have to be at least 75% full to operate as designed. In a 250-L fermentor this would be approximately 188-L. The culture used to innoculate this would be 19-L, if using 10% inoculum. With regard to making a determination to examine the fermentors more closely via environmental sampling the writer believes that the 150-L fermentor "Big Bertha" would have been difficult to operate innocuously and discreetly due to its large Size. The fermentors that were relocated to (to include Big Bertha) were probably deconned before leaving USAMRIID, although no official documentation could be retrieved. At this time, no official record of Ba Ames having been fermented was located and the usage time frames, materials used, and protocols for the smaller fermentors have not been fully determined. Additional review of documents from,the Automated Logistics Requisitioning System (ALORES) a rat USAMRIID is being compiled and reviewed for identification information for the above mentioned fermentors.
