washington, D, C,
Dear Mr, Hoover: . -
Enclosed is a pege fron the Gallipolis Daily Tribune
containirg a letter to the editor which is nore or less self-explanatory.
The background for this is briefly as follows, OD
I have been interested in the work of the American Friend:
Servirze Commities for a nuxder of years and have no reason to doupt its
vulidity or to question it in any way as an organizetior., As a chureh-an
and responsible citizen, I am on a local committee consisting of a musber
of clergymen and service club leaders, the ourvose of this comnittec being
to sponsor a visit at Gallivolis this summer by a so-called "Peace Curavan"
of the Ansrican Friends Service Committee, This caravan consists of four
studente, threo of whom will be from foreijm countries who will visit in
the community for a week, specking at churches and service cluhs atte:oting
to create better understanding of the international problen which nreduces
the tensions of our present critical tines, Though, as I stated alove, I
have never had reason to suspect ths Service Cormaittee of epything the leas’
bit subversive, and thourch I have admired thetr work trerendously, I feel
that both sides of a question shoulda be concidered. In other words, if
there 4s any evidence that the American Friends Service Cornittes is rot
comilctely above suspicion, I would like to know it,and conversely if it
4s above reproach fron a standpoint of subversion, waiich I think it is, I
believe thet the doubts cast upon it by tr. Burnett should be remnovuod. I
could think of no ono better to write to than vou. I wouls eoorecinin very
mucn, therefore, your cerments ant, £ you would cere to co so, a ttntarent
that could be published by the locul newapnver, cither in the forr of
letter to the editor, or a statencut directly for publication.
