Letter to tne ed:cor of the New Fork 7:mes
Srate war correspondent. Orviue and
Jonathan Sche!, November 26, 1969
We do not know who may have ordered the mas-
sacres a: Song My.
Be. tre Unired Steves milltary authocides have
conducted th: war in Vietnam by driving the peopie
from their homes, burning anc desirvying villages,
Widespreac and indiscriminay attacks on the country-
Wide, extensive and persistent programs to eliminate NLF
village leaders, and other forms of pinage and killing.
In such s war there is 2 continuing slaughter of the
people. Lit: becomes cheap. Atrocity becomes common-
place. What one side does “justifies” the otner.
Whether or not Song My was ordered from higher
up, # is mot a unique case of slaughter among civijians.
Tt is part of the broad pattern of civilian casualties in
this war.
The American Friends Service Committee has been
dealing with the consequences of indiscriminate attacks
fr Vietnam for years, in our service to civilian war vie-
tims ir Quang Ngai Provinee. Since 1966, Quaker Service
doctors, nurses, artificia’ limb-makers, physica! thera»
pists, and other staff membere have been working in
eonjunction with the Quang Ngai Province Hospital.
Song My is close by-—-eome six miles away. Also
close by are many othe: hamlets and villages which have
been fire-bombed and attacked from sir, land and sea by
bombs, shells and bullets.

Gatepos: at ASS Po wnt. at Qcang Nga, Socth Vietnam
Our staff at Quang Nga! have chserved helicopters
and bombers firing from overhead, have heard the artil-
lery harassment and interdiction fire, have done what
they can to help the thousands of wounded and maimed
civilians thatstream inte Quang Ngai from the surround-
ing hamlets after these actions. We have seen some die
and some survive. We have seen some wounds heal weR
and sume poorly. We have put arms on some, legs on
others, and boik arms and legs or sti: others.
We are sickened by the continuing slaughter. We
shalt stay in Quang Ngal doing what we can until the
slaughter stops. But patching up broken bodies of women
and children is not our goal, It is our burden.
The goa! ia peace in Vietnam. The goal is a ewift
end to this atrocious war.
