On Novernber 1, 1955, a first source advised that
the Southern Student Orgunizing Comittee S500) with head-
quarters et 1705 Portier:c Avenue, Neehville, Tennessec, was
formed on the weekend cf April 3-5, 1964, to stinulate
activity of Southern stucent groups in arezs cf civil rights,
peace, ecedemic freedou, civil liberties, cepitel punishme nt
and unemployment, Originally, it was to be @ white counter-
pert of the Student Nonviolent Coordinsting Comnittee (SCC).
It has aerced te work with similar interested groups such as
SNCC and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS ) and Southern
Conference Educationel Fund, Inc. (SCEF). SSOD is a fraternal
affiliete of SDS.
Beginning in the Fall of 1956, SSOC became & member-
ship orgénization and embarked on a campaign to form local
chapters on vérious college campuses througnout the South.
S500 publishes, October through liay each year, a publicetion,
“Rew South Student", which according to the above source has
increasingly espoused and defended the pro-Communist and
anti-United Stetes position on domestic and foreign policy.
