AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE (2) The American Comeuntist Party does not now represent and hes never represented apy other political party or any other country; (b}) The Party does not now advocate and has never advocated the violent overthrow of the United States Government; (c) Capitalism cannot be equated with democracy, nor is Capitalism in the interesvs of the United States, Mr, JOHNSON said that, for these reasons, he is a Socialist. According to Mr, JOHNSON, the United States can and must coexist with the Communist mations. He said that peaceful coexistence represents fer the first time in modern history the prospect of werid-wide peace, Before 1917 (the date of the Russian Revolution), Mr. JOHNSON explained, war was the policy of the Capitalist governments when they could not achieve their aims by any other means. Their reasoning, he said, was of this order: "War is not only inevitable, but necessary," Communists, however, he stated, do not believe this, Since the Russian Revolution of 1917, the system of Socialism has existed in the world and has presented the peoples of the world with an alternative to Capitalism and, thus, an alternative to war, according to Mr, JOHNSON, From the Socialist conception of ownership of the workers, etc., and, therefore, no desire to expand markets, engage in international competition, etc., there arises the concept of peaceful coexistence, Peaceful coexistence, according to Mr. JOHNSON, means the absence of wars cf competition, which are the inevitable outgrowth of Capitalism and the Capitalist State. : Diametricaily opposed to the wars of Capitalist competition, however, said Mr. JOFISON, are wars of defense and liberation (the letter may te termed "People's Wars"), The position of the Socialist nstions toward such wars 4s twofold, according to JOHNSON: ~2-
