Recent activity of the AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COM<ITTEE has made
it advisable that a summary on subject organization be prepared for disseminae -
tion and that information available in other agencies be solicited.

The FRIENDS is a Quaker organization with headquarters in Phila-~
delphia, Pas, at 20 South 12th Street. Subject group, a section of the i,
RESISTER'S INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL ANTI-MILITARISTS GROUPS, |
wae registered with the Secretary of State on November 9, 1939, as an orfan-
dzation engaged in the solicitation and collection of contributions to be: -

pamphlet entitled "The Society of Friends in Regard to War" was issued in
Cincinnati, Ohic, by subject group, which stated that war end Christianity
are incompatible; therefore they, as Christians, cannot support war. CLARENCE
PICKETT is known to have mailed a form letter to the President in the name
of the\POST TAR FORLD COUNCIL, the specifio purpose of which was to urge ex-
tension to Japanese aliens of the right to a hearing before civilian boards
to attest their loyalty. One GEORGE KNOX'ROTH, a representative of the
AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE, ALSRICAN QUAKER GROUP, headquarters at
554 Eaat Orange Grove Avenue, Pasadena, California, has also been an active
~ opponent of Japanese evacuation from the West Const.

It is believed that there are 19 members of the FRIENDS in Mexico
at present, in the vicinities of Torreon, Coah.s, Durango, Dzo., and Vera
Cruz, Veracruz, The boys are occupied in such work as draining swamps and
'” minor construction, while the girls are doing gratuitous recreational work
for the Mexican people, the purpose of which is the improvement of inter-
national relations between the United States and Mexico, In moat cases the
boys have been granted permission by their draft boards to engage in this
_ work for 6 months, It is reported that many members of the FRIENDS are
engaged in similar free work among the migrating workers in the United States,
