Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island, California, stated that he was advised by the control room at that institution that at about 7:15 a.m. when the inmates were being counted that officers had found three dummy faces in the beds of inmates. He immediately proceeded to the main cellhouse where he ascertained that JOHN WILLIAM ANGLIN, CIRENCE ANGLIN and FRANK LEE MORRIS were the inmates involved who had escaped.! They had evidently effected this escape by way of holes which they had made in the ventilator area in the rear of their celis,. They had evidently climbed up the plumbing fixtures in the utility corridor immediately to the rear ; of the cells to the top of the third cell tier. They had i evidentiy spread the bars in the ventilator area to the roof and removed the ventilator lid. An immediate check was made of the Island toe locate the inmates. ‘ Later in the same day it was ascertained that there was W7Z, the ventilator areg in the cell of inmate and that evident] ii. was to have gone with em bu eason was left beh . There was also a dumy face located | cell which he had proposed using. WEB scares that the ANGLINs and MORRIS had escaped 7 Z fr A om their cells about 9:30 p.m. on June 11, 1962. check of the area indicated that the ANLINs and MORRIS after going through the hole in the roof had probably climbed down the large black pipe by the bakery and over the fences.
