Captioned individual wrote 6-13-62, referring to the -
2 possible escape of three prisoners from Alcatraz. He indicates that
when the prison was built the Director said he would grant full pardon
NX to anyone who successfully escaped. Correspondent indicates he is
refreshing the Director's memory.
Nothing was located in Bufiles to indicate that the
. Director made such a statement. This prison was actually built in
(1909, and used as a military detention barracks until 1933, when it
was turned over to the Department of Justice to be used as a Federai
enitentiary. Obviously the Director would have no authority to grant
pardon and it appears he is being grossly misquoted.
