| On May 11, 1949 an article appeared in the "Dally 3
Workerteeunder the caption of "Church and Civic Leaders to Meet.
Against War Pact," which stated that a meeting of church and
civic leaders to'make their opposition to the North Atlantic
Pact Manifest" had been called for May 20 and 21 in Washington
Dp. ©. by Albert Einstein; Phomas Mann, kmily Yreen Balch,
Bishop W. J. Walls and Reverend Edwin Dalbert.
The article stated that the letter calling the conference
was read to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that day by
James Embree who appeared as an opposition witness to the Pact
and representing the Progressive Party of New Jersey.
According te the article, the letter described the
conference as a non-delegated meeting of leaders of civic,
church, labor and community organizations. "No responsitility
grounds to make our stand for a real and lasting peace,
