MEMORANDUE FOR THE DIRECTOR
Ret ordie situation in
evark, New Jersey.
United States District Judge Williem|Clark telephoned mo. from...------
Newark, Nev Jersey, and said that he would like to Imow if thi eau has
any investigators in Newark with respect to the criue situation resulting
from the killing of Dutch}Schultz. I told him that ve were looking into
the metter to ceterwine if there are any violations within our investigetiv:
jurisdiction. He said that "Newark has been a little bit neglected by the
Depertnent, and the result of that is that these gangsters heve nor all
comeover here {Nevark}, and I think you ought to hive some special people
put in here because all of the local men are tied up with politics, end
all of the gangsters in here heve violated the income tax laws, which woulc
give the Bureau jurisdiction".
I pointed out to Judge Clerk that income tax matters are not rithin
the investigetive jurisdiction of this Bureau, the srme being handled by the
Treasury Departuent. Judge Clerk said that he believed this Bureau ought to
“ive them some help. He saic that some time ago, the Treasury people had
someone intervier him relative to these income tex matters, but since thet
time "they hsve done ebsolutely notnin,; ebout it", this being in March of
this yeer. Judge Clerk egain seid thet he believed we ought to send some
special investigetors in there, stcting thet the local police force is very
poor, and it appeared to him that the Treasury Depertuent nes not going to—-———-
do anything about this. -
