eer ¢ | 99 8 = February 11, 1980 be Honorable? Adlai Stevenson Senate Office Building _ . - Washington, D. Cc. 20515 Be a Dear Mr. Stevenson: a _ . . - We (my wife, friends and I) : saw you on television and listened - to your comments on the “Abscam Operation."* It is apparent - that you have a very strange and uncommon conception of what - is proper conduct for a United States Congressman. 7 It is hardly conceivable that a man of your intelligence could believe a Congressman can commit a criminal or unethical act and be immune from investigation and prosecution. Bo you really be- lieve that it is not "proper" that the FBI should step in to protect the interests of the citizens of this country, and the reputations of those members of Congress who are honest? Doesn't it worry you a little that the Representative from Michigan, despite his conviction for embezzlement, still sits. in Congress and uses the word "Honorable® in front of his name? Was the cover-up of Watergate any less ethical than the cover-up of Chappaquiddick? Come down off your high horse, After all, a U. S. Senator is only an elected representative of the people of his state. He is not a "Lord of the Manor*" and he does not exercise the "Droit de Seigneur," Honesty is the prime requirement ina Congressman, Otherwise the government becomes a farce, ae : Yours truly (no respectfully ).
