A> 1 Fens : ¢ @Sthiraicd C Upon seeing the Senator he told me that some prominen Ce I rom the State of Alabama who were j im that the FBI resid as responsible for the bombing, however, the FBI refused to make an arrest because this would embarrass the Administration. The Senator stated he knew this to be false but just wanted to hear it from us. I asked the Senator if he had ever known the FBI to enter into such a scurrilous deal of this nature. He replied in the negative. I told him that Mr. Hoover would never be a party to any such matter and that for his information we had made no arrest in this matter, neither had we identified anyone as yet who was responsible for + ‘tthe bombing. I told the Senator that whenever the FBI had sufficient confirmatory « |jevidence to procure a warrant that we would go ahead and initiate such action and let the chips fall where they may. The Senator stated he knew all of this but just wanted to talk = : {the matter over. a 3S | The Senator and I discussed a number of things regarding Commissioner wl: 4 George Edwards who is attempting to be a Federal Judge. Edwards will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee within several days. Senator Eastland plans to give hin a hard time. The Senator also told me that the Scripps-Howard newspapers are ging t launch a campaign against Edwards.
