Re: Bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church
This, of course, has seriously hampered our inveaigation.
We have interviewed and reinterviewed the suspects and their associates
to the point where we are getting practically nothing from them. In fact, most of
them will not even talk to us. Spot surveillances of the Klansmen have been un-
productive and Inspector feels at this time that they are familiar with most of our
cars in this area. While we have received some very worthwhile information from
informants, we do not have enough coverage of the “action” group. There ave been
no bombings or other violence since September 25, 1983, undoubtedly partly as a
result of invesiigative pressure. However, there are indicatias that the "action"
group of the Klan is zettinz bolder.

The local authorities, both city and state, have reduced their investigative
activity concerning the bombings to a minimum. Ins ctor feels that there must
be a fresh approach at this time and we should attempt to place microphone coverage
on as many of the key suspects wno are members of the Kian "action" sq as
possible as well as on the r Pa Is.

Inspector has made on-the-scene tour of the area around suspects’
residences and Klavern meeting places and microphone coverage appears feasible
in most instances. Birmingham Office has also been advised that it is imperative
to increase efforts to obtain additional live coverage on “action” zroup. During
instant inguiry Insvector noted
The envisioned increased microphone verage should enable us to obtain
a zreat deal more information concerning the day-to-day activities of the "action"
group. Inspector feels that with the additional data we undoubtediy will obtain
together with the inforna tion we have, that we should continue to give consideration to
eventually having some of the Kian “action” group subpoenaed before an investigating
