t SUB-PROJECT NO. 124 (See also Nos. 2 and 140) OBJECTIVE AMD DETAILS OF WORK : The objective was to develop a more sophisticated methodology for measuring carbon dioxide ten- sion, the pH of body fluids, and to study relationships between blood pH and psycnophysiological variables. The acid-base equi- librium of psychiatric patients was to be surveyed. Then, the feasibility of altering the acid-base equilibrium, and thereby their mental condition, by carbon dioxide inhalation was to be investigated. The duration of psychophysiologic alteration after such inhalation was also to be studied on normal volunteer patients. 'The apparent CIA interest was to investigate the possibility of in- ducing a drug-like state through the simple expedient of carbon dioxide inhalation.
