PROPOSAL . . Objective : To study the possible synergistic action of drugs which may be appropriate for use in abolishing consciousness. Situation : There is reason to believe that; Wo or more drugs/ used in combination/ are more effective than single drugs. The combined effect of some : drugs , such as combinations of barbiturates, are kncvn. With other combinations, the degree of synergism i3 not known. If considerable synergism is found to exist/ two possibilities must be considered: (l) that a particularly useful combination may be found, and (2) that a particular-combination may be hazardous because of its effect on respiration or scmeother vital function. To minimize hazards,- animal experiments "should precede human experiments. Proposal : Allocation of $1000 for animal experiments, to he drawn -on as needed.
