“*WORST' RACE RIOTS SEEN IN WASHINGTON" - Headline - Chicago Tribune, May 6, 1963.
“dashington, May 5 - Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, the controversial New York Democratic
congressman, today predicted one of the worst race riots in history will occur in
Washington unless two things happen. The riots will occur, he asserted in remarks at
the Shiloh Baptist church, unless: 1. The social factors which produce racial tensions
are removed, 2. Unless the Negro community, “particularly the upper and middle class
group, arouses itself to a new involvement with its less fortunate, economically ex-
ploited and emotionally deprived black brethen.”
Powell, who is pastor of the Abyssinian Beptist church in New York, referred to the
fact that Maicolm X., the No. 2 leader of the Black Muslims, is transferring his activ-
ities to Washington. He said Malcolm X. is moving from New York to the capital because
there is no leadership here, and added:
"I warn white America now that the ‘hate white,’ ‘black nationalists,’ ‘Muslim move-
ment will rapidly increase unless the white community rapidly makes way for full
equality."..,,
“BLACK MUSLIM LEADER SPEAKS ON U.C. CAMPUS" - Headline
American Civil Liberties Union NEWS, San Francisco, Nov. 1963. No. 1l. Pg. 3:

California campus in Berkeley last month at a Slate-sponsored forum. He discussed his
organization's views on racial problems in the United States.
In 1961, the University, over the objections of the ACLU, barred Malcolm X as a cam-
pus speaker on the grounds that he was appearing as a minister of his religious faith
and would be espousing his group's religious views. Under the University's charter,
sectarian activities are forbidden on the cempus."
NOTE: The ACLU of Northern California (in 1961) along with 161 faculty members
of the University of California at Berkeley, protested the cancellation of a
talk before the NAACP chapter of Malcolm X, The ACLU has been very successful,
aiso, in lifting the ban at various campuses throughout the country on Coamunist
criminal ‘speakers who subtly arouse the sympathy of our youth toward the C,P.
