Dr. Fronczak made known his : decision to leave the organization ‘{in the following statement: “Due to the hectic conditions in these chaotic times, I am severing my connection with a number of non-official organizations, includ- ing the Niagara Frontier Defense Committee.” Caught in the middle of a city- wide controversy because of its consideration of a resolution advo- cating an immediate declaration of war against Germany, the Niagara Frontier Defense Committee today delayed preparation of.a substitute resolution until pubXec reaction has shown what its peicies should be. McCleth Resigns Chairman Chauncey J. Hamlin, who sponsored the pro-war resolu- tion, is convinced that public dis- cussion of the question was “tend- ing to clarify the situation.” Meanwhile, following action by Mayor Holling, Fire Commissioner Castimore and Public Works Com- missioner Louis A. Harding, Police Commissioner McClellan ane nounced his resignation from the committee. However, Chairman . Hamlin said his organization would continue as an unofficial body. “We are no longer responsible for the defense of Buffalo,” Mr. Hamlin explained. “The official defense council, appointed by May-. or Holling, now has charge of that. It will be our duty to see that the ‘|defense council operates and ac- tually does something.” . -The latest attack on the com- mittee for its consideration of. the Hamlin resolution came from C, S. Bishop Hobson warned the United States to “shun the road to appeasement and to realize that man cannot exist half slave and A similar letter was sent to Mrs, George W. Thorn of the Erie Coun- ty W. Cc. T. U., who had framed the organization’s original letter to Mr. Hamlin. Mr. Hamlin said he had received letters from persons willing to fill vacancies resulting from with- drawais from his group.
